A Runner’s Guide to Theodore Wirth Park
Did you know that Theodore Wirth is one of the most popular places to trail run in Minneapolis? It has a wide assortment of trails for beginners and experienced runners. These trails offer runners a softer footing which can reduce injuries and acts as a great place to get off the roads.
Trails for Every Runner
Whether you’re looking for a relaxed jog or a challenging long run, Theodore Wirth Park is your place. Beginners tend to explore the less technical trials, while seasoned runners take on rolling hills and windy singletrack. Additionally, the park offers a variety of surfaces which includes dirt, gravel, and single-track trails.
North Wirth is where most runners begin their run. You will have access to the Trailhead, Bassett Creek, and several of the park’s famous singletrack trails, including the hilly and windy Back 40, Conundrum and 45 North Trails. You can also use North Wirth as a jump off point to the Luce Line Trail – which features over 100k of paved and gravel trails heading west from Minneapolis. Park at “The Trailhead at Wirth Park” or in the neighborhoods of nearby North Minneapolis.
Wirth Lake is the most beginner friendly trail. This paved lake loop is about 1.25 miles long and provides a flatter route that’s great for easy runs. There are two parking lots at Wirth Lake that offer ample parking except during peak hours. Nearby neighborhoods offer additional parking.
For more challenging workouts, South Wirth is the place to go. Most runners start at the Wirth Beachouse Parking Lot or park in the neighborhoods near Xenia Ave. N and Glenwood Ave. South Wirth contains rolling hills, wooded trails, and a mix of narrow singletrack and wider ski trails. Popular spots amongst this route include Quaking Bog, Eloise Butler, and Wildflower Garden.
What to Know Before You Go
Before arriving at the park, plan a few extra minutes to find parking and go over the trailhead. There are restrooms and seasonal water fountains around the park which can be accessed by google maps. Remember to utilize good trail manners by being conscious of your surroundings, and being careful of bikers when on shared trails. If trails are wet from rain, consider bringing trail running shoes that offer better traction to gravel.
