Runner training outdoors on a paved trail

Minneapolis running routes offer some of the best places to train in the Midwest. From scenic lakes and riverfront paths to wooded trails, the city has options for almost every type of runner. Whether you’re looking for an easy recovery run, long run, or trail workout, finding routes you enjoy can make training more fun and consistent.

What are the Best Minneapolis Running Routes?

Chain of Lakes

The Chain of Lakes connects Lake Harriet, Lake of the Isles, Cedar Lake, and Bde Maka Ska, giving runners scenic waterfront views throughout the route. The relatively flat terrain makes it a great option for easy recovery runs, steady runs, and longer marathon training sessions. Additionally, it’s one of the most popular places to run in Minneapolis.

Trail Distance: The Chain of Lakes section of the Grand Rounds offers about 13.3 miles of trails, making it easy to customize your run depending on your training plan.

Recommended Parking: Bde Maka Ska is a great place to park and start your run, with parking available around the lake and easy access to the surrounding trails.

Mississippi River Trails

The Mississippi River trails combine river views with some of the best views of the Minneapolis skyline. The route goes along West River Parkway and connects to the Stone Arch Bridge area, which provides a scenic view of the Minneapolis skyline. The paved trail network makes it easy to customize your distance based on your training plan, whether you’re looking for a short recovery run or adding extra mileage to a long run.

Trail Distance: The Mississippi River section of the Grand Rounds is about 9.2 miles, while West River Parkway itself offers about 7.2 miles of trail.

Recommended Parking: The Stone Arch Bridge area is a great starting point, with paid parking available nearby and easy access to West River Parkway.

Theodore Wirth Regional Park

If you are looking for soft footing, Theodore Wirth Regional Park is your place to go. This park offers miles of wooded and off-road trails with plenty of rolling hills. The variance in terrain allows runners to build strength while enjoying a quieter running experience. For a more detailed breakdown of the area, check out our Runner’s Guide to Theodore Wirth Park.

Trail Distance: Theodore Wirth has more than 5 miles of off-road trails, along with additional paved and multi-use trails throughout the park.

Recommended Parking: Park at The Trailhead at 1221 Theodore Wirth Parkway. It provides convenient access to many of the park’s trails and is a great place to start and finish your run.

Minnehaha Park

Minnehaha Park combines paved paths, scenic parkways, and access to some of the area’s most recognizable landmarks. The paved paths are ideal for recovery runs, while runners are able to extend their route if desired. The trails also provide access to Minnehaha Falls and other scenic areas throughout the park.

Trail Distance: The Minnehaha section of the Grand Rounds offers about 12.6 miles of trails, giving runners plenty of options for both short and long runs.

Recommended Parking: Minnehaha Regional Park has both free and paid parking lots, along with on-street parking, making it easy to access the trails near Minnehaha Falls.

Before heading out, check the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board for current park, trail, and recreation information.
